I want to tell you about a Tuesday. Not a big day — his big days, the award, the war, the kids being born — those will be told by people who can string them together better than I can tonight. I want to tell you about a Tuesday in 1996 when my father taught me how to change a tire. He didn't want to. It was cold. He had a cold. I had a learner's permit and a flat and an absolute refusal to call for help, which I had inherited directly from him. [PAUSE.] He stood behind me for forty-five minutes with his hands in his pockets and didn't say a single word until I'd finished. And then he said, "Good. Now do it again faster, because next time it'll be raining."...
